Catnip Controls Products
Webcat
The Catnip Controls Webcat is a sophisticated controller that enables you to manage your world from your web browser.
The Webcat is connected to one or more personal computers, either by means of a standard IT network, dedicated cable or IEEE 802.11b radio link. Each connected computer may monitor and control the system by means of a standard web browser.

Features and Benefits
- Control from any network - connected computer
- Radio links reduce cabling costs
- Web interface reduces training costs and operational errors
- Industrial strength software for high reliability
- Reduced TCO
Connectivity
The Webcat allows any device found in an industrial control setting to be controlled via a web interface. The device receives incoming data in a variety of forms:
- Radio link
- RS-485 serial link
- RS-232 serial link
- Ethernet
- Logic inputs or switch closures
- USB and IEE1394
Outputs include
- Video for video signs
- Audio for public address, background music playout and alarms
- RS-232 for varible signs
- Digital switch outputs for power control
- Ethernet or IEEE 802.11b wireless networking
Flexibility
Typical devices that may be controlled include:
- Vending Machines
- Point Of Sale Terminals
- Access controlled doors and turnstiles
- Car park barriers
- Heating and Ventilation
- Lighting
- Security cameras
- Variable signs and video displays
- Process Control
Capability
The Webcat is equipped with a powerful HTTP web server and database system which leverages AJAX techniques to enable complex interfaces to be presented to the user in readily understandable form, thus reducing staff training time and operational errors.

The web interface is also used when customer terminals such as vending machines or point of sale terminals need to be connected to a system. Machines of this nature that have needed a comprehensive GUI have in the past contained a complete personal computer and application software, leading to difficulties in application software version management, operating system licence management, and increasing equipment costs as the software needs ever more powerful hardware.
This is relegated to the past with the Webcat approach. All a vending machine need contain is a simple diskless system that boots from the network. An open operating system and web browser are used along with a small driver application that converts XML communications from the web server into a form suitable for peripherals such as card readers, coin mechanisms and ticket dispensers.

Because the Webcat uses an industrial strength operating system, system data is secure from intrusion and virus problems, whilst remaining readily accessible from inexpensive office computers.
Embedded Controllers
To enable our clients to be able to take full advantage of the facilities offered by the Webcat, we offer a design and build service for control boards to be incorporated within products to enable webcat control.
Pictured above is an example board where we provided the circuit design, printed circuit layout and software for the on-board microcontroller.
