Introduction

This sequence of pictures shows how to remove a hard drive from an Acer Extensa 502T. These instructions are intended for people experienced in working on IT equipment and do not go into great detail. Proceed at your own risk. The screen has been removed from the laptop to aid clarity. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Before working on the machine, remove the internal battery and power cord, and wait a few minutes for the power supplies to discharge. Take adequate anti-static precautions, especially in dry climates.

Firstly remove the plastic cover that protects the flexible printed circuit and cable feeding power and signal to the display.

Then remove the keyboard retainer.

The keyboard may now be hinged up and lifted out, then laid face down over the lower half of the machine.

The next step is to remove the plate over the drive bay. After removing the screws the plate required a fair bit of manipulation before the lugs released.

Remove the final drive retaining screw (red arrow). Note that there is another possible screw position (purple arrow) but no screw was fitted here (or had fallen out) on my example. After removing the screw carefully lift the drive carrier away from the motherboard.

Remove the screws (four in all) from each side of the drive carrier.

The drive may now be unplugged from the drive carrier, and replaced with a new one. No links were fitted to the drive. Some foam was stuck to the underside of the original drive; this was carefully unpeeled and affixed to the same place on the new drive. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
